Arturo got up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water. Crickets warbled from beneath the floorboards as he walked through the house. He was still thinking of Karo, how broken she looked, how sad. He walked past her bedroom and opened the door. He leaned in and when he saw the bed was empty he searched the house, counting to himself, calming himself. He should have known she’d sneak out. Always something with that girl.

He looked out the window. The car was gone. He sat in his recliner and waited for her, telling himself she’d be fine. There was an ache inside him, like a block of bad gas. Like a heart attack. So he breathed deep and said a prayer.

“Who is this Kurt?” he said aloud.

“That’s the boy Karo likes,” came the answer.

He looked up and his youngest, Lia, was standing in the kitchen doorway, dressed in mismatched socks, a football jersey, and shorts. In her hands were two big bowls of ice cream.

“What are you doing up?” he asked her.

“I figured you might need company,” Lia said. “Karo can be pretty. mean.”

His heart melted then, at the sight of his daughter, this small figure lit by the lamps in the kitchen, with a voice like the angel of God.

“Want one?” Lia asked, offering him a bowl. “It’s mint chocolate chip.”
